布鲁诺·马尔斯、菲利普·劳伦斯、阿里·莱文和克南进入录音室，想要创作出一首能超越披头士的歌曲，但是毫无成果的布鲁诺将稿子全部扔进了垃圾桶，四个人开始在录音室里走过来走过去。他们感觉疲惫，不想工作。布鲁诺感觉很烦躁，表示他不想做任何事情了（Today I don't feel like doing anything at all）。这句话敲开了大家的思绪，于是四人开始创作这首关于“懒汉”的歌曲。歌曲在洛杉矶的Larrabee录音室和Levcon工作室两个地方完成录製。
