注意
- traveler主要用于美国，英国及其所有大英国协国家都拼作traveller。
- 以“元音字母+l”结尾的一些词，若以非重读音节结尾，则添加以元音字母开头的后缀时有时末尾的字母l双写与不双写均可。其中不双写的是美式拼写。
- 该规则适用的后缀：-ed、-ing、-er、-or、-est、-ry、ty。
- 对于后缀-en，英式的woollen和woolly要双写。
- 对于后缀-ise、-ist，英式有tranquillise、duellist、medallist、panellist、triallist。
- 对于后缀-ous，英式有marvellous与libellous。
- 对于后缀-ee，英式有libellee。
- 对于后缀-age，英式有pupillage。
- 对于以下几个单词，美式同英式一样採用“双写l”：bimetallism、cancellation、chancellor、crystallize、excellent、tonsillitis、raillery。
- 当词尾的“l”前有辅音，或者是有两个元音字母的时候，英式也通常不必双写。例如：hurling、revealing、fooling。
- 英式的calliper（千分尺、两脚规）一词，美式拼作caliper，但该词并不是由“词根+后缀”构成的。
